Been mostly busy with my diploma thesis, moving, a bit of WoW and a bit of tinkering.

I've installed Munin yesterday to play around with it and I'm immensely impressed.
Muchinteresting information amd set up for master + 3 nodes in ~20min with no former experience. From reading the docs, the Debian/Ubuntu packaging maybe played a bigger part here than with some other packages.
Going to let it run for a few days now then I'm trying to make sense of it all.

I've also dug a bit deeper into Nagios, but the configuration format is much less attracting. Then again the tools are only slightly related and it would probably be best to let Munin report to Nagios, we'll see if that's to be done anytime soon.

Back when installing ZendStudio 5.5.0 on Ubuntu I sometimes had the following error:

An internal LaunchAnywhere application error has occured and this application cannot proceed. (LAX)

This is because the \u variable of bash (username in the prompt) is mistaken for an (illegal) \uXXXX unicode character.

After searching back then I found out (and back then it wasn't #1 hit on a google search) that you just have to temporarily alter your .bashrc:


(fa@don):(~) $ echo 'export PS1="# "' >> .bashrc
(fa@don):(~) $ source ~/.bashrc

then start the installer and after you're finished, removed the last line and source it again.

I've been testing KDE4 a bit for the last week and this a short note (mostly to myself) of stuff I came across, made me wonder or yell at. Maybe it's getting fixed and I abandon GNOME :P

• switching virtual desktops via keyboard shortcuts- ctrl+f1-f4 is useless to me, I've always used ctrl+shift+arrow keys. So I try to search for it and get Ubuntu Bug 183782 - just that this settings dialog doesn't have the required shortcuts to set fot me


• konsole - the font looks better aliased than on GNOME - and I have no clue why, will investigate (not to make it worse, but to improve GNOME :P)


• konsole - I am switching tabs with alt+left/right, KDE4 says this is a global shortcut and I can't use it. damn


• task panel - the widgets are unlocked by default and I killed my "task manager" widget by mistake, and I couldn't get it back by going to "Add Widget"->Add, then Drag'n'Drop. You have to directly drag it out of the "Add Widget" dialog to the panel, but I don't get why you can't drag it from your desktop to the panel


• widgets - never forget to "lock widgets" - or see above


• widgets - the battery display (working on a laptop) just display X% - the system tray thingy on GNOME also showed me "time left". I know I can get any decent app to run in the system tray, but there was a default thing. But maybe because that is me running KDE on normal Ubuntu and a proper kubuntu has some better defaults (aka I made mistakes installing)


• dashboard - I have no clue what this is, I press ctrl+f12 and get a weird display of windows, but not really any use


• klauncher - the app invoked by alt+f2 - it randomly crashes every second or third run, but at least it executes the command first :)


• themes - I somehow managed to repeatedly switch my theme in the appearance dialog, I blame it on not recognizing that the default theme is platinum and the preview screenshots are too small, I really wonder why they don't scale

To sum it up it looks quite nice, but I can't work when two of my most-used keyboard shortcuts are not available - but I'll have a second look (on kubuntu I guess) when Hardy comes out.

Neulich war ich ja noch ziemlich begeistert von Ubuntu, aber wenn man jetzt nicht Breezy nimmt sondern Dapper, dann siehts ein bsischen anders aus.
Vim 6.4 hat erstmal mein Syntaxhighlighting geschrottet und dann irgendwann hab ichs aber wieder hinbekommen.
sudo cp /etc/vim/vimrc.spkg-dist /etc/vim/vimrc
und dann nochmal alles ändern.
diff -u hat mir keine Erleuchtung gebracht, imho steht jetzt wieder dasslebe drin - und die vorherige vimrc hat unter Ubuntu Breezy und unter Debian stable und testing wunderbar funktioniert. Komisch, aber egal.

PHP5 aus den Paketen ist mehr eine Qual - Apache 1.3 ist nichtmal mehr in der Default-Distribution drin, nur apache2. Den hab ich jetzt auch mal zum Testen genommen, samt PHP Version 5.1.2-1ubuntu1.

Bei dem Schneechaos und Semesterferien hat man mal kurz ne Stunde Zeit zum rumspielen.
Und weil mein FreeBSD 5.x aufm Laptop immer noch keine .inputrc geschluckt hat und der Cisco VPN-Client erst ab 6.0 gehen sollte und ich keine Lust auf Updates hatte, hab ich mal was neues probiert (diesen Sommer? naja).

Vor mir lag die Ubuntu 5.10-CD vom Linuxtag (oder von der Systems? Keine Ahnung.), die ich vor einiger zeit schonmal testweise auf einen alten P2-350 installiert hatte und die einen guten ersten Eindruck gemacht hat. Also fix reingeschoben, FreeBSD-Partitionen gekillt (mit einem Hauch russisches Roulette, wenn man nur anhand der Partitionsgrößen Vermutungen anstellt, welche es sind ;)) und nach dreimaligem Umentscheiden dann doch mit 512MB Swap gemacht.

Die Installation lief fix durch und es schien alles zu gehen. Sound!, USB, Suspend to Disk, GRUB als Bootmanager (wow, hätte nicht gedacht, nach über 7 Jahren doch mal LILO zu ersetzen) und nach ein bisschen apt-get-Gefummel auch SpeedStep (glaub ich, hängt noch am Strom ohne Akku drin).
Der 2200BG-Wireless-Chipsatz wurde erkannt und iwconfig zeigt "radio off" mit vernünftigen Parametern an - scheint zu klappen.
Ansonsten alles ganz toll, hab zwar vermutlich nen Bug in Dexter's PHP-Paketen für Breezy entdeckt, aber sonst passt alles.

Apache, PHP, MySQL, Samba, SciTE sind schon installiert, man kann fast produktiv arbeiten :P

amaroK rockt richtig und cream taugt auch ziemlich.

Einziger Kritikpunkt ist das sudo-System von Ubuntu, dass man keinen root-Account hat und permanent sein Passwort eingibt - gerade am Anfang. Abhilfe schafft
alias su='sudo -s'
was zum Glück schnell gefunden war in der recht passablen Doku. Und die Community scheint auch fit zu sein, wohl auch teilweise Debian-Wechsler, aber insgesamt wirken die Forenposts/etc weniger elitär.
